After every Northeast Ohio winter, yards need a systematic cleanup before the growing season starts. Here’s the order that makes the most sense — and why sequence matters.
## Spring Cleanup Checklist (In Order)
### 1. Wait Until the Ground Is Dry Enough
Going into a yard too early — when the soil is still saturated — compacts the soil and damages grass roots. Wait until you can walk across the lawn without leaving deep footprints.
### 2. Remove Winter Debris
Leaves and branches that didn’t get cleaned up in fall are now matted and wet. They’re smothering the grass underneath and need to come out before anything else. This is the most labor-intensive part of spring cleanup.
### 3. Dethatch If Needed
If you have more than half an inch of thatch (the layer of dead grass between the soil and living grass), spring is the time to remove it. Thatch blocks water and nutrients from reaching roots.
### 4. Edge Beds and Borders
Clean edges between lawn and garden beds make everything look intentional and well-maintained. This is one of the highest-impact things you can do for curb appeal relative to the effort.
### 5. Cut Back Perennials and Ornamental Grasses
Most perennials that weren’t cut back in fall should be cut to a few inches above the ground before new growth emerges. Ornamental grasses should be cut back hard (6–8 inches) before they start growing.
### 6. Apply Pre-Emergent (if appropriate)
If crabgrass is a problem in your lawn, apply pre-emergent herbicide when soil temps reach 50°F — typically late April in the Cleveland area.
### 7. Mulch Garden Beds
Fresh mulch in spring suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and gives beds a clean, finished look. Apply 2–3 inches, keeping it away from plant stems and tree trunks.
### 8. First Mow
Wait until grass has actively started growing (usually when it needs its first cut). Set the mower height higher than you will for summer — never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at once.
### 9. Pressure Wash Hard Surfaces
Once the yard work is done, clean the driveway, walkways, and any exterior surfaces that took a beating over winter. Road salt residue, algae, and winter grime come off best in spring when the weather is cool and surfaces aren’t baking in summer heat.
## When to Call in Help
Spring cleanup for an average Northeast Ohio property takes 4–8 hours if you’re doing it yourself. Many homeowners find it’s worth hiring out — especially for debris removal (hauling is the part nobody wants to do).
Mr. PowerWash handles spring cleanups across Greater Cleveland including debris removal and haul-away. We also take care of the pressure washing at the same time — one call, one crew, done.
