Fences take more abuse than any other exterior surface on a property — constant exposure to weather, soil contact, heavy tree and shrub contact, and no overhang protection. By the time most homeowners notice their fence needs cleaning, it’s been building up for years.
## Types of Fences We Clean
**Wood fences (cedar, pine, treated lumber)**
The most common fence type in Northeast Ohio. Wood fences develop gray weathering, green algae, and black mildew within a couple of seasons without maintenance. Cleaning before staining or sealing is essential — applying stain over a dirty wood fence causes rapid peeling.
We use low-to-medium pressure (700–1,200 PSI) with wood-appropriate cleaning solutions. Too much pressure on wood opens the grain and causes fuzzing.
**Vinyl (PVC) fences**
Vinyl develops the same algae and mildew issues as vinyl siding. Soft wash (low pressure + cleaning solution) is the right approach — excessive pressure can crack or permanently mark vinyl.
**Metal/aluminum fences**
Typically require light pressure washing and degreasing. Rust spots can be addressed but may need additional treatment.
**Chain link fences**
High pressure washing is effective for chain link — it removes accumulated grime and organic material from the wire and posts.
## Should You Clean Your Fence Before Staining or Painting?
Absolutely — this is non-negotiable. The same principle applies to fences as to decks: stain bonds to wood, not to dirt, algae, or old failing stain. Cleaning first means the stain job lasts 3–5 years instead of 1–2.
After cleaning a wood fence, allow 48–72 hours to dry completely before staining or sealing.
## Including Fences in Larger Jobs
Many homeowners add fence cleaning to a driveway and house washing visit — one crew, one trip, everything cleaned at once. This is typically the most cost-effective way to handle it.
